In the heart of Siberia, a remarkable school stands as a testament to the power of faith-based education. The Franciscan Catholic School “Nativity of the Lord” in Novosibirsk, russia, recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, a milestone reflecting its enduring commitment to holistic child development.
Founded shortly after the fall of the USSR, the school emerged amidst the rebuilding of the Catholic community. It offers a unique curriculum that nurtures students’ intellectual, spiritual, and social growth. Remarkably, the school welcomes children from diverse backgrounds, including Christian (primarily Orthodox) and muslim families, fostering an inclusive surroundings.
Father Corrado Trabucchi, an Italian Franciscan friar, has served as the school’s director as its inception in 1994. He encapsulates the school’s philosophy with its motto: “to make a compassionate heart out of a selfish heart.”
The school, accredited within the Russian Federation, operates as a non-governmental entity. It provides a four-year primary education program, preceded by a preparatory year. Currently, 57 students are enrolled, guided by a dedicated team of four teachers. Beyond standard Russian curriculum subjects, the school integrates music, singing, and religious studies. Each day begins with a brief prayer, setting a tone of reflection and reverence.
The religious curriculum introduces students to the bible, iconography, and the lives of revered saints, including Sergius of Radonezh and Saint Nicholas, figures deeply meaningful within Russian culture. The school also introduces children to the teachings of the Quran, demonstrating its commitment to interfaith understanding.
The school’s commitment extends beyond academics. teachers actively support students from disadvantaged families, ensuring they receive the resources needed to succeed. In collaboration with local churches, the school provides meals and additional support to bridge any educational gaps. “It is indeed critically important for us that the children’s personalities develop in a harmonious way,” explains Father Corrado, “and that they can concentrate on their studies.”
Physical activity is also prioritized, particularly during Siberia’s harsh winters. The school’s gym provides a vital space for exercise and recreation. Holiday programs offer enriching experiences, such as poetry recitals, which also help address any speech impediments. Father corrado fondly recalls the school’s first students, many of whom have become parents and have chosen to enroll their own children at the school, a testament to its lasting impact.
The school’s legacy extends beyond its walls. “All these years,” says Father Corrado, “the school has been supported by benefactors. We remember them with gratitude. We are glad that we have been able to sow the good seed in these 30 years and we thank the Lord and all our friends for that in the hope that we will be able to continue on this path.”
The Novosibirsk Franciscan School stands as a beacon of hope and education in a challenging environment, demonstrating the transformative power of faith, community, and a commitment to holistic child development.
