The event, which has been a two-day event since 2018 and whose fast and high-quality course is ensured behind the scenes by more than 20 people, traditionally took place in the main hall of the Zvíkov Brewery under the patronage of the Czech-Moravian Association of Microbreweries.
This year, 94 tasters evaluated the beers in ten basic tasting committees and four final committees. The tasters taste by consensus, so they have to agree on which beer is good enough and of good quality to advance to the next round. In the same way, they have to agree at the end which beer will win.
“At this year’s edition, there were really a minimum of beers that did not meet the standards, and in most categories it was very difficult to determine the winner due to the balance of the samples,” evaluates the event Michal Voldřich, president of the Czech-Moravian Association of Microbreweries.
In the most prestigious category of Czech lager, Pivovar Trilobit won this year with its beer Trilobit light lager. “We are happy for this award, which is a huge surprise for us and at the same time a big commitment for the next years,” say the brewers and co-owners of Trilobit Brewery Petr Buriánek and Monika Linková.
The competition is intended for microbreweries, research and school breweries, and their beer samples are classified into 15 categories – light draft beer, Czech light lager, semi-dark lager, dark lager, light and dark wheat beer, strong light bottom-fermented beers, semi-dark bottom-fermented beers strong, dark bottom-fermented beers strong, New England IPA – NEIPA, super-strong bottom-fermented beers, Pale Ales, India Pale Ales, sour beers, super-strong top-fermented beers and stouts.
