Health authorities of Vietnam have reported a case of rabia in a 7-year-old boy in Dien Ban who died. On September 13, 2024, a stray dog bit the boy on the forearm. The animal’s whereabouts are currently unknown. In addition to the child, the animal also bit a 27-year-old man who went to get vaccinated.
The teacher cleaned the boy’s wound with salt water and soap and advised his family to take him for vaccination. However, his family did not take him for vaccination, but instead took him to a traditional healer in Le Trach market in Da Nang city for treatment.
On October 10, 2024, the child had fever and vomiting and was taken to Quang Nam Regional General Hospital. There, the child bit the side of his tongue, then showed photophobia and increased fever, and was transferred to Quang Nam Regional General Hospital. Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics.
Since the beginning of the year, Quang Nam has had 12 rabies outbreaks in 5 districts and cities, including Hoi An, Dien Ban, Dong Giang, Hiep Duc and Que Son. Of these, 3 outbreaks were detected in unowned dogs carrying the rabies virus in the area.
