Novak Djokovic’s Quest for Eighth Wimbledon Crown and Equaling Roger Federer’s Record

This Sunday, Novak Djokovic will seek his eighth ‘crown’ at Wimbledon, which would equal the record set by Roger Federer in 2017. The Serbian tennis player has an appointment with history on the Central Court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, where he will face the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, current number one in the world.

Djokovic has dominated the British Grand Slam in recent times, as we remember that he was crowned in the last four editions. He has not lost a match in the emblematic British tournament since July 12, 2017, the day he was eliminated by the Czech Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.

Since that defeat, ‘Nole’ has 28 consecutive victories and adding one more would tie another record for the Swiss tennis player, who won five consecutive titles, from 2003 to 2007.

It should be noted that Djokovic is one win away from winning the first three Grand Slams of 2023, a feat he already achieved in 2021. If he sells ‘Carlitos’, the man from Belgrade will have the opportunity to equal the record of Rod Laver, the only tennis player in the ‘Open Era capable of winning the four ‘big ones’ in the same year (1969).

The only Wimbledon final that Djokovic has missed

The Serbian, former number one in the world, has won seven of the eight finals he has played at ‘La Catedral’. The only colleague capable of beating him in this instance was the British Andy Murray, who in 2013 beat him 4-6, 5-7 and 4-6.

In the semifinals, Djokovic had achieved a marathon victory against Argentine Juan Martín del Potro, whom he left on the road in five sets: 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (8) and 6-3. For his part, the Scotsman beat Polish Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

Murray ended a 77-year drought and gave Britain the first Wimbledon title since Fred Perry’s triumph in 1936.
