London –
Not only defeat in Final Wimbledon 2023, Novak Djokovic must also be willing to accept punishment for damaging his racket. Ouch!
Djokovic faces Carlos Alcaraz at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Sunday (16/7/2023) evening WIB. As the champion of four consecutive editions, Djokovic is having trouble facing his opponent who is only 20 years old.
After fighting five sets for 4 hours 42 minutes, Djokovic had to admit Alcaraz’s advantage with 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, and 6-4. He had to give up the Wimbledon trophy to fly to Spain to be under Alcaraz.
Djokovic was indeed bothered by Alcaraz’s game. In the deciding set, Djokovic reached the peak of his anger when he lost his serve and trailed 1-2 in the third game.
Djokovic, who was annoyed, then hit the racket at the net post until it broke. Djokovic’s action received a warning from umpire Fergus Murphy.
The day after the final match, Wimbledon imposed a penalty of 6,117 pounds or around Rp. 119 million for Djokovic’s racket damage.
The fine was immediately deducted from the runner-up prize that Djokovic received, around 1.175 million pounds, or around Rp. 23 billion.
Novak Djokovic’s quest for a 24th Grand Slam title continues at the US Open in September. He has already won the Australian Open and French Open this year.
