Novak Djokovic Set to Become Oldest World Number One, Breaking Federer’s Record

Next record: Novak Djokovic will become the oldest world number one.

It hasn’t been officially communicated by the ATP yet, but it’s already fixed. Novak Djokovic will replace Roger Federer as the oldest world number one.

There is now hardly a record on the ATP tour that Novak Djokovic doesn’t hold. The “Djoker” has now shattered numerous of Roger Federer’s records, including the record for most weeks as world number one. Federer’s 310 weeks at the top initially seemed set in stone before Djokovic easily passed his eternal adversary. This week the Serb spends his 414th week as world number one. For comparison: That will soon be twice as many weeks on the world rankings throne as Rafael Nadal (209 weeks).

ATP ranking: Federer loses next record to Djokovic

Djokovic will definitely break another ranking record in a few weeks, even if the ATP has not yet officially announced this – namely the record as the oldest world number one. Federer currently still holds this. On his last day as number one, on June 24, 2018, the Swiss was 36 years and 320 days old. Djokovic, who celebrates his 37th birthday on May 22nd, will also take this Federer record when the ATP rankings are published on April 1st, 2024.

But wait a minute! Until then there are still two big tournaments, the 1000cc events in Indian Wells and Miami! Yes, that’s right. That’s why it has tennis MAGAZIN recalculated and came to the conclusion that Djokovic cannot be displaced from the top of the world rankings by April 1, 2024. On April 6th, the Serb will be 36 years and 321 days old. So he can already cool the bubbly for his next record. This is mainly because Djokovic did not play the tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami in 2023, as there were still entry restrictions in the USA for people who had not been vaccinated against Corona at that time. This included Djokovic.

Indian Wells and Miami: Djokovic can only win points

Before the start of the tournament in Indian Wells, Djokovic has 9,885 points in the ATP ranking (Alacaraz: 8,805, Sinner: 8,270, Medvedev: 8,015). Since he didn’t compete in Indian Wells or Miami last year, he won’t lose any points in the world rankings. He can only gain points in both events. Since his competitors Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev scored points in Indian Wells and Miami last year, none of this trio can overtake Djokovic in the next few weeks. Alcaraz (Indian Wells title, Miami semi-final; 1,360 points to defend), Sinner (Indian Wells semi-final, Miami final; 960 points to defend) and Medvedev (Indian Wells final, Miami title; 1,600 points to defend) cannot get enough points on it Add account to obstruct Djokovic’s record as the oldest number one in the world. This means: Even if Djokovic loses his opening match in Indian Wells and Miami, which is hardly conceivable, he could not be overtaken by Alcaraz, Sinner or Medvedev. The point gaps in the world rankings are too large for that.

Uncatchable: Even if Carlos Alcaraz gets the “Sunshine Double” and Djokovic loses early in Indian Wells and Miami, the Serb would not be ousted from the world rankings throne after the two US 1000 tournaments.

In the current annual world rankings, which so far only covers the months of January and February, Djokovic is only in fourth place with 860 points. In this ranking, Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner is clearly ahead with 2,500 points. There is a chance that Djokovic will lose his place in the sun to Sinner in the spring or summer. But until that happens, the insatiable “Djoker” will continue to increase his ranking record to dizzying heights.
