Novak Djokovic Reflects on Career and US Open Semi-Final Win against Ben Shelton

While the women’s US Open final will take place today, Saturday, September 9th, the men’s final will not take place until tomorrow, Sunday. Before his duel with Daniil Medvedev, record winner Novak Djokovic spoke about a possible end to his career and his semi-final win against American shooting star Ben Shelton.

Tomorrow, Sunday, September 10th, Serbian tennis professional Novak Djokovic will face his Russian opponent Daniil Medvedev in the final of the US Open. The 36-year-old doesn’t only have positive memories against him, as he has had to admit defeat to the current world number three five times so far. This was most recently the case at the tournament in Dubai this year, but Djokovic probably suffered the most painful defeat in 2021 – when he lost to Medvedev in the final of the US Open in three sets.

Statements about Shelton cheering

Before the meeting with his Russian opponent, the “Djoker”, who won in three sets against the American Ben Shelton in the semi-finals, not only spoke about a possible end to his career, but also about the imitation celebration of his 20-year-old opponent. Although this was initially put into a provocative context, Djokovic explained his imitation differently: “I just love Ben’s cheers. I think it’s very original, which is why I copied it and stole it.” Shelton established his celebration, in which he imitates a telephone receiver with his fingers, as his trademark at Flushing Meadows.

End of career is currently not an issue

In addition to the game against Shelton, Djokovic spoke not only about his impressive form, but also about a possible end to his career, which the 36-year-old cannot imagine in the near future: “I feel good physically. As good as it has been for years. Age is only a number. I don’t want to worry about leaving the tennis stage while I’m at the top of the game. I would deal with it if the young people kicked my ass in the Grand Slams in the coming years.”

Now Medvedev is waiting

After his three-set win against Shelton (6:3, 6:2, 7:6), Djokovic now faces Daniil Medvedev, who showed a top-class performance against the exceptional Spanish talent Carlos Alcaraz and beat the reigning Wimbledon winner in four sets (7:6 6:1, 3:6, 6:3). On his way to the final, Medvedev eliminated, among others, his compatriot Andrey Rublev as well as Winston-Salem winner Sebastian Baez and the Australian Alex De Minaur (ATP. 13). Djokovic beat Taylor Fritz, Borna Gojo and Laslo Djere. The latter caused him the most problems; Djokovic decided the encounter after a strong comeback in five sets.
