Nole again, always Nole. Djokovic still puts its seal on the US Open, gaining the pass to the final at Flushing Meadows for the tenth time in his career. Everything was easy for the Serbian who beat young Ben in the semi-final Sheltonfor the first time among the best four in a Major, with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 in two hours and 41 minutes. A one-sided generational clash for long stretches between two diametrically opposed tennis players in terms of experience and quality: if for Djokovic, in fact, it was the 47th Slam semifinal, for Shelton it was just the 44th match on the circuit. And the difference was evident. Shelton got off to a sprint start in the first five games, then Djokovic dominated in the first two sets. The Serbian was also in control in the third set (a break ahead and close to 4-1), when he suffered an empty pass, canceling a set point and closing only at the tie-break. In the biggest game – so far – of his young career, Shelton proved himself tostill unripe (43 free errors for him): the American has to put many pieces together, both in his shots and in his mental strength, but there is no shortage of positive signs.
Djokovic’s numbers
On the other hand, Djokovic remains unplayable in the Slam semi-finals: that’s 22 victories, in fact, in the last 23 (the only knockout with Thiem at Roland Garros 2019). For Nole it will be there 36th Slam final, a record already in his hands for some time and retouched with a +5 over Roger Federer, second in the special ranking. The Serbian, who will be chasing his 24th Major title on Sunday, he also becomes the first tennis player to reach at least 10 finals in two of the four Slams (Australian Open e US Open).
