The second round of the US Open smiles at Novak Djokovic, who after a tough first set against the Spanish Zapata Miralles (6-4), closes the practice with two consecutive 6-1s. Surprise eliminated Stefanos Tsitsipas (7): the Swiss Stricker wins with the score of 7-5, 6-7, 6-7 7-6, 6-3. Same fate for Casper Ruud (5), who yields to the Chinese Zhang 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0, 2-6. In the women’s draw instead, everything is ok for Swiatek.
MEN’S TABLE
Novak Djokovic passes without worries in the third round of the Us Open, struggling only in the first set against Zapata Miralles. The number two seed in the seeding has to come back from the disadvantage, but after winning the first set 6-4 the challenge is downhill: double 6-1 and passage of the round for Nole. Out instead Stefano Tsitsipas, who is surprisingly eliminated by the Swiss Stricker in the fifth set. The Greek loses the first, but seems to straighten out the match after the double 7-6 and as many victories in the tiebreak, which instead proves to be an enemy in the following set. He reaches the fifth and it is the Swiss who wins with a score of 5-7 7-6 7-6 6-7 3-6. Regularly ahead instead Djere (32), who eliminates the French Gaston in three sets.
Complicated day for the other top seeds on the draw. Eubanks (28) was eliminated in four sets by the Frenchman Bonzi with a score of 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, while Francisco Cerundolo (20) lost in the super-tiebreak against Vesely after five very tight sets. Only Mannarino (22) passes, who needs the fourth set to eliminate Marozsan. Withdrawal for Thiem, who gives up at the beginning of the second set against Shelton (6-7 0-1 retreat).
In the Italian night, the big surprise is represented by the knockout of the top seed
Casper Ruud (5) against Zhang Zhizhen: it ends 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 for the Chinese, who takes advantage of his opponent’s ups and downs to find a prestigious victory. Davidovich Fokina (21) settles J.Cerundolo in three partials, the American Tommy Paul (14) recovers the Russian Safiullin after the 3-6, 2-6 of the first two sets and scores a 6-2, 6-4, 6- 3 which projects him to the next round, while compatriots Tiafoe (10) and Fritz (9) easily snatch the pass for the third step of the competition with a clear 3-0 respectively over Ofner and Varillas. The challenge between Droguet and Mensik is finally won by the Czech.
WOMEN’S BOARD
No worries for Iga Świątek, who defeats Gavrilova in two sets: 6-3, 6-4 the score in favor of the number one in the world, who continues on her way. Also the home darling Coco Gauff (6) advances, eliminating the 16-year-old prodigy Andreeva with a score of 6-3, 6-2. All regular also for Muchova (10): double 6-3 to the Polish Frech. Bencic (15) and Mertens (32) also advance, while Beatriz Haddad Maia is out: the landlady Townsend rules the Brazilian with a score of 7-6, 7-5.
Advance without playing Elena Rybakina (4), favored by the withdrawal of Ajla Tomljanovic several hours before the match, scheduled for the night.
