Novak Djokovic on the hunt for Roger Federer’s last record

From Sunday the eight best of the year will play singles and doubles at the ATP Finals, which will take place in Turin for the first time. The favorite is Novak Djokovic, who could win the tournament for the sixth time.

After this year there is hardly any doubt: Novak Djokovic is the most successful male tennis player in history. Like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the Serb now has 20 Grand Slam titles, but he is the only one from the trio to have won each of the four major tournaments at least twice – as well as the Masters tournaments.

Djokovic also led the world rankings for 346 weeks and ended a year on the throne for the seventh time. Both are records. He only missed the Grand Slam, winning all major tournaments within one year, because he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the final of the US Open.

Now Novak Djokovic is preparing to tie Roger Federer’s last significant record: the Swiss won the final of the eight best of the year six times – once more than Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl and Djokovic. From 2012 to 2015 he won four times in a row. Since then he has been waiting for a success at the last tournament of the year. In 2016 he lost the final against Andy Murray, in 2018 against Alexander Zverev.

The Russian should not only be Djokovic’s strongest challenger, he also competes as defending champion. A year ago, he had prevailed in the final of the tournament, which was held in front of empty ranks, against Dominic Thiem.

In 2020 Medvedev won against the top 3 of the tournament in London.

The game is initially played in two groups of four, each day from 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The first two of the group reach the semi-finals, where the first competes against the second in the other group for a place in the final. A total of $ 5.7 million is at stake. Whoever wins the tournament unbeaten will receive $ 2.3 million. Only in the four Grand Slam tournaments is more paid out.

The Norwegian Casper Ruud (22, ATP 8) and the Pole Hubert Hurkac (24, ATP 9), who defeated Roger Federer in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, qualified for the first time. It is his last appearance to this day. And in a week, Federer’s last record could also be history.
