With the announced retirement of Rafael Nadal, tennis already had a news of the week. Now Novak Djokovic could shine with a sporting highlight: In Shanghai he is aiming for his 100th tournament victory.
The final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai, China (Sunday, 10:30 a.m.) promises some excitement. With Jannik Sinner, the world number 1 from Italy meets the long-time holder of the throne Novak Djokovic. The 37-year-old Serb has the opportunity to win his 100th professional tournament.
“I traveled here with the vision and the desire to fight for my 100th title,” said Djokovic. “Now I have the chance to play against the best player in the world and we’ll see what happens.”

Ranked 3rd on the all-time best list
Only two tennis players have broken this mark so far. The American Jimmy Connors achieved 109 tournament victories, Roger Federer ended his career with 103 triumphs. Nadal follows in fifth place with 92 tournament wins, with Ivan Lendl (94) in between.
In the Shanghai semi-finals on Saturday, “Djoker” prevailed against Taylor Fritz. He also won the tenth duel with the American. It was 6:4 and 7:6 after just under two hours.
How fit is Djokovic?
There is a small question mark about the Serb’s physical condition. As in the quarterfinals, he didn’t seem to feel completely comfortable against Fritz. When he was down 5:6 in the second set, he sought treatment from a physiotherapist.

Djokovic spoke of a “tough test” that he had overcome. «I had a few problems here and there on the pitch yesterday and today. But I managed to overcome it.” He wanted to avoid a third set and was happy that he got through in two rounds against the in-form Fritz.
More than 18 years after his debut victory at the clay court tournament in Amersfoort, Netherlands, Novak Djokovic is now reaching for his 100th success. This includes 24 victories in Grand Slam tournaments – that’s a record.
