Roger Federer sees a new one of his longevity records fall to the benefit of Novak Djokovic, almost 37 years old.

Novak Djokovic has become the oldest world No. 1 in history, surpassing Roger Federer who was at the top of the hierarchy until exactly 36 years and 320 days in 2018. For the Serbian, that’s 36 years and 321 days Sunday in Monte-Carlo, while he will only play his first match on Tuesday or Wednesday at the Masters 1000 which opens the season on clay, at home for him since he lives on the Rock all year round.

Still far from Federer in consecutive weeks

Already No. 1 since March 2021 in the number of weeks spent at the top of the ATP ranking (now 419 against 310), “Djoko” will approach his first week of competition without his coach Goran Ivanisevic, with whom he stopped his collaboration which had lasted since 2019. King of the planet for the first time at 24, the man who last year also became the record holder for Grand Slam titles – with a 23rd crown at Roland-Garros, and 24 since the US Open – is the oldest world No. 1 in history not only among boys, but also among girls.

In fact, only eight men have been number 1 after 30 years, Novak Djokovic et Roger Federer so (36 years old), then Andre Agassi et Rafael Nadal (33 ans), John Newcombe, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl et Andy Murray (30 years) ; however, there were only three among women, Serena Williams at 35 years old and Chris Evert as well as Martina Navratilova at 30 years old. Novak Djokovic will certainly still remain world No. 1 until April 22, however he will have to hold out for some more time to catch up with Roger Federer’s total of 237 consecutive weeks at world No. 1, compared to 122 for the current series of Serbian, fourth behind Jimmy Connors (160) and Ivan Lendl (157).
