Novaja Gazeta suspended LA.LV

Novaja Gazeta

Russia’s independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta said on Monday that it would suspend operations and not publish in print or digital until the end of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

According to the editorial office, it has received another warning from the Russian Federal Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications Monitoring Service “Roskomnadzor”.

“Two Roskomnadzor warnings a year threaten to revoke a media license,” the newspaper reported in its Telegram channel.

Both warnings relate to the mention of non-governmental organizations and the media on the list of “foreign agents” “without appropriate labeling”, Roskomnadzor said.

The Novaya Gazeta, co-founded in 1993 by Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the USSR, has so far been the only major newspaper in Russia that has criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and his policies.

Dmitry Muratov, editor of Novaya Gazeta, received the Nobel Peace Prize last year.
