– We have had biblical proportions with rain last night and throughout the day, said Mayor of Halifax Mike Savage on Saturday, writes CNN.

– This has been an extraordinary event, and it follows shortly after the forest fires not so long ago, in addition to Hurricane Fiona last autumn, he adds.

A large forest fire in the Halifax area, which started in May this year, destroyed 151 homes. Over 16,000 people were evacuated. Now the citizens are hit by a new disaster.

Streets are flooded, people have been evacuated, and four people are missing after their cars were washed away in two separate incidents.

Two of the missing are children.

– Last night we searched a flooded field and found a pick-up with no people in it. We believe it is the car the two children were traveling in, Canadian police say in a statement Sunday.

Three people who were in the same car as the two children managed to get away.

– I can’t stop thinking about these families and these four people. I want them to know that we are doing everything we can. I know the whole province is with me when I pray for them to come home safely, says Tim Houston, who is Nova Scotia’s provincial minister at a press conference.

According to the minister, this weekend around 250 millimeters of rain fell in one day in the province.

– We received three months’ worth of rain in less than 24 hours. It came fast, and it came violently.

He tells of enormous damage:

19 bridges in the district have been damaged. Six of them are completely destroyed. Several roads are completely closed, and many people are isolated.

– It is absolutely incredible to see the power water has, and what it caused. We are working as quickly as we can to open our roads again, he says.
