Notre-Dame Restoration Milestone: New Copper Weathervane Installed on Restored Spire

Dec 16, 2023 at 8:15 PM Update: an hour ago

Since Saturday, Notre-Dame has had a new copper weathervane on the restored spire. This is an important milestone in the restoration of the cathedral in Paris, which was severely damaged in a fire in 2019.

The new copper rooster was blessed on Saturday by the Bishop of Paris. It was then placed on the wooden spire with a crane.

During the fire in April 2019, the old rooster fell through the roof after the roof was weakened by the flames. The old rooster was badly damaged and was therefore replaced by a new one. The old rooster can now be seen in a museum.

The new rooster is shaped like a flame. The statue should be seen as a phoenix rising from the ashes, said chief architect Philippe Villeneuve.

The restoration of Notre-Dame should be completed next year, French President Emmanuel Macron promised last week. The cathedral will reopen for ceremonies and visitors in December 2024.
