A 58-year-old man from Delft was caught last weekend when he tried to find a creative way to avoid paying his bill at a restaurant. The man turned out to have not paid 127 times in recent years after eating and drinking in restaurants.

Bartender Mike Hogeveen was at work when the man struck again at a restaurant in the city center. “He gave all kinds of rounds to the visitors to our business. He ate and drank everything together.”

The man then started shaking his arm. Other guests suspected that the man was having a stroke and called 112. “The ambulance arrived quickly,” Hogeveen tells Broadcasting West.

Declaration

However, the ambulance staff did not trust it and announced that they would not take the man to the hospital. They also reported to the catering business that the man refused to pay his bill. The restaurant then called the police.

“The man thought he could get out of the bill of more than a hundred euros by pretending to be a sick person,” Hogeveen summarizes. The restaurant has filed a report.

Civil case

A police spokesperson confirms to the broadcaster that the man is known at many catering establishments in Delft as a notorious food pirate. “A civil procedure had previously been started, but because the man remained busy, we took action last weekend,” the police said.

It is unclear whether the man is still in custody and whether he still has to pay the various bills.
