Tetsuya Nakata (61), president of the third sector “Noto Railway” (Anamizu Town, Ishikawa Prefecture), which was affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and has been completely suspended, responded to an interview with Kyodo News on the 13th and suggested alternative transportation by bus. He announced that he is considering it. “We aim to restore operations as soon as possible,” he said, with an eye toward resuming service in some sections that suffered little damage, mainly for regular commuters.
There is no prospect of a full reopening. Noto Railway explained that 70% of its passengers commute to work or school. “First of all, we want to quickly create a transportation plan using buses. We want to move forward with the resumption of high school classes,” he said.
On the other hand, roads may be damaged due to the earthquake and trains may not be able to operate on time due to traffic jams on detours. There is a fear of secondary disasters due to the series of earthquakes, and he said, “We want to start where we can, but we cannot predict what kind of bus transportation will be best.”
President Nakata is looking to resume service in a portion of the Nanao-Noto-Nakajima (Nanao City, same prefecture) section where the vehicles are being held. The combination of buses and trains is “still hypothetical, but we need to consider it,” he said.
