Weather Alert: Civil Protection Notice for Heavy Rain, Storm Winds and Snow at Low Altitude
National civil protection alert BAD WEATHER: Intense rains especially on the major islands, rain showers in the center-south and snow down to low altitudes. Strong storms in the islands are worth noting.
On the day of Saturday 19 March, cold air from Russia will still involve part of Italy. At the same time, a vortex from Tunisia will cause local bad weather conditions in the center-south.
On the basis of the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection, in agreement with the regions involved – which are responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions which extends the previous ones. The weather phenomena, impacting on the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).
For the day of Saturday 19 March:
Rainfall: – widespread and persistent on the Ionian side of north-eastern Sicily and on the eastern sectors of Sardinia, with moderate to punctually high quantities; – scattered over the remaining eastern sectors of Sicily and, locally also with a reverse character, over the southern and central Ionian sectors of Calabria, with cumulative quantities that are punctually moderate; – from isolated to scattered on the remaining sectors of Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia and on Basilicata, ionic and central-northern sectors of Puglia, central-eastern Molise, eastern slopes of Abruzzo, southern Marche and Tyrrhenian sectors of central-northern Lazio and Campania , with low cumulative quantities.
Snowfall: above 8000-1000 m on the reliefs of Basilicata and Calabria, with weak contributions to the soil; above 1000-1200 m on the reliefs of eastern Sicily, with moderate contributions to the ground, up to abundant on the eastern side of Etna.
Visibility: no significant phenomenon. Temperatures: generally decrease in the evening values, also sensitive especially in the Center-South.
Winds: strong from the eastern quadrants on Sardinia, Sicily and locally on Calabria, Campania and Puglia, with gusts of gale on the northern and southern sectors and reliefs of Sardinia and southern sectors of Sicily, up to strong gale on the Pelagie Islands; northern forts with storm reinforcements on central-western Liguria, in attenuation.
Big: from agitated to very agitated the Strait of Sicily and the central-southern Ionian; rough the Sardinia Channel; very rough, up to rough offshore, the Sardinian Sea; very rough, up to rough near northern Sardinia, the central Tyrrhenian; the rest of the Ionian, the northern and southern Tyrrhenian and the southern Adriatic are very active; very rough, initially rough offshore, the Ligurian Sea sector of Ponente.

The information on the regional alert levels, on the specific criticalities that could affect the individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will monitor the evolution of the situation.
