Tensions are rising in Thailand and protest rallies have been on the agenda since mid-July and are growing. They are convened by groups of students who demand a fundamental reform of the authorities. At the same time, they also criticize the functioning of the monarchy, thus violating one of the deep taboos of Thai society.
Around ten thousand people came during the largest protests to date, including Wednesday’s demonstrations. However, the organizers hope that on Saturday and Sunday, up to one hundred thousand dissatisfied Thais could come to the metropolis from different parts of the country. Police expect 50,000 turnout.
