The film releases of the week

Fatih Akin’s “Head-On” may briefly remind you of her. But “Ellbogen” (Cinenova, Lichtspiele Kalk, Odeon, OFF Broadway) follows the fate of 17-year-old Hazal in a much less dramatic way. Despite her efforts, as a young woman with migrant roots she cannot find a place in the German majority society and does not want the place assigned to her in the migrant community. The promising young actress Melia Kara brings a reserved Hazal to the screen, who at some point has to explode violently in order to find her true path. Based on the eponymous work by Fatma Aydemir, Aslı Özarslan’s debut feature film premiered at this year’s Berlinale and was shown there in the Plötzensee prison, among other places. It then won the jury prize at the International Women’s Film Festival.
Actress Jamilah Bagdach will be a guest at Cinenova on Sunday, September 8th at 8 p.m.

18-year-old Trine (Kornelia Melsæter) lives on the Lofoten Islands, a group of islands in northern Norway. The climate activist and talented trumpet player receives an invitation to audition at the Oslo Opera House. She has five days and decides to hitchhike the 1,500 kilometers instead of flying. “Practice, Practice, Practice” (Odeon) is a drama about a young, driven woman who gets involved, appeals to the responsibility of her fellow human beings and encounters ignorance and her own limits. Practicing her instrument helps her find inner contemplation on her road trip. Director Laurens Pérol carefully accompanies Trine’s path to self-discovery, with special encounters along associative dream images and meditative image and sound compositions. Unexciting, rewardingly sensual, it takes some getting used to.

Also new in cinemas: Marie-Lou Sellem’s directorial debut “The School for Wives”, Artus’ French hit comedy “What is Normal?” (Cinedom, Cinenova, Cineplex, Odeon, Rex, UCI), Markus Goller’s ex-marriage drama “The Irony of Life” (Cinedom, Cinenova, Cineplex, Residenz, UCI, Weisshaus), John Rosman’s spy drama “New Life” (Lichtspiele Kalk) and Dominik Galizia’s crime drama “Rock’n’Roll Ringo” (Filmpalette). Also starting are Hayley Easton Street’s bloody pre-marriage excursion “Something in the Water” (Cinedom, Cineplex, Rex, UCI) and Camiel Schouwenaar’s worthwhile youth adventure “Stay on the Ball – No Matter What Comes”.
