Nothing new in the West
In his novel “Nothing New in the West”, published in 1929, Erich Maria Remarque shows the atrocities of the First World War from the point of view of the young soldier Paul Bäumer, transferred to the Western Front. Spurred on by the teacher’s patriotic speeches, Paul’s entire class volunteered for military service. The boys learn during their basic education that their teacher’s patriotic speeches in the schoolyard have little to do with the horrific reality of war. Experiences at the front change Paul permanently. During a stay at home, he can’t talk about his experiences with friends and family, so he returns, disappointed and broken, to his classmates who have become family stand-ins. Paul’s group is soon found. One by one they die in battle. Eventually, Paul is also fatally shot.
With his film adaptation, Edward Berger has managed to create a congenial translation of the novel that depicts not only the horror, but also the gluttony and inhumane escalation logic of war. Berger treats the individual elements of the novel quite casually, but basically grasps the intention of Remarques. With a few exceptions, the film was well received in this country.
