Notepad and Paint will soon have new image and text functions

Notepad was introduced by Microsoft in 1983 and was previously rather plain. Now Microsoft is expanding the simple text editor with the AI function Rewrite, which potentially makes it smart.

Microsoft Paint will also receive an AI function that is already in use in a similar form by giants such as Adobe Photoshop. You can now test both functions.

Who are the new functions interesting for?

Primarily for Windows 11 users who quickly write simple notes and short texts using Notepad. If you like to use Paint for simple changes, you now have another tool integrated.

A corrections update was already presented this year.

How are Notepad and Paint changing?

With the Version 11.2410.15.0 Notepad is equipped with Rewrite and supports you when writing in a similar way to ChatGPT.

  • … have sentences rephrased,
  • … adjust the tone or style,
  • … refine the text length.

You always have the option of choosing an alternative suggestion or returning to an earlier version.

Microsoft Paint comes with “Generative Fill” and “Generative Erase«, i.e. generative filling and deleting.

For example, you can add castles to your image by entering text. Image: Microsoft.

This allows you to use the command prompt…

  • …to remove part of the image.

However, Generative Fill is not available to all users.

How do I get the new features?

In Germany, Rewrite, Generative Erase are available in preview for Windows Insiders and will be introduced with upcoming updates. It is important that you log in with your Microsoft account. Generative Fill, however, is initially only available for Copilot Plus users.
