Jakarta –
Cholesterol doesn’t just attack the “elderly”, this disease can affect anyone, even children. Therefore, doctors recommend that people over the age of 20 regularly check their cholesterol levels.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 94 million adults in the United States (US) have high cholesterol. Cholesterol triggers a person’s risk of stroke or cardiovascular disease.
Cholesterol is divided into two types. There are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
LDL cholesterol is known as the “bad” cholesterol that resides in the bloodstream. LDL can build up in blood vessels, forming fatty deposits called plaque. This plaque can cause other problems, including heart attacks and strokes.
Total and LDL cholesterol levels should be low. But having more HDL, or “good” cholesterol in your blood, can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.
Doctors can measure HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol levels. The results can also show levels of all non-HDL fats that can increase heart disease risk.
