Corona vaccination is getting closer for more and more people. But what should you watch out for before and after – for example when exercising and consuming alcohol?
Kassel – In Germany, the corona vaccination campaign is picking up speed, and a lifting of the vaccination prioritization is becoming possible. In view of their first corona vaccination, many people wonder what to watch out for after the vaccine has been administered.
Can painkillers and alcohol be taken after and before the corona vaccination? How long should you refrain from exercising after the vaccination? We give an overview.
Robert Koch Institute (RKI): What you should consider before your corona vaccination
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the state of health of the person to be vaccinated must generally allow a vaccination. However, this is not limited to the corona vaccines, but applies to most vaccinations. Only in the case of known allergies to ingredients of the vaccine are not vaccinated. This can be clarified in advance with the doctor.

Apart from that, children and adolescents under 16 or 18 years of age, depending on the vaccine, may not yet be vaccinated against the coronavirus. In addition, vaccination is currently not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as the data are not yet informative enough. Anyone who has already had a Covid 19 infection and has no immunodeficiency can currently be vaccinated at the earliest six months after recovery, the RKI continues. The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) only provides for one vaccination dose.
Corona vaccination: taking painkillers preventively does not help
In some places it has been advised to take pain reliever or antipyretic medication in order to prevent possible vaccination reactions. Hans-Michael Mühlenfeld, chairman of the Bremen General Practitioner Association, told Bayerischer Rundfunk that such measures make no sense, as any complaints that may arise cannot be prevented in this way.
But what about after the corona vaccination? Mühlenfeld reports that a strong vaccination reaction can feel like a cold and can be accompanied by pain in the limbs, headaches and fatigue. In this case, your family doctor recommends the usual medicines – depending on what you would otherwise take in the event of a cold. This does not affect the effectiveness of the vaccination.
Is alcohol okay after the corona vaccination? This is what you should pay attention to
In an interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk, internist Beate Sauter does not assume that alcohol affects the effectiveness of the vaccination. Nevertheless, she recommends drinking only a small amount. Mühlefeld also warns: If too much alcohol is drunk before a vaccine is administered, the body is busy breaking it down – and not building up antibodies after the corona vaccination.
According to the German Green Cross, there is no evidence that you have to completely refrain from alcohol after a vaccination. Nevertheless, it is advisable at this point not to overdo it and not to unnecessarily burden the body.
Exercise after vaccination against the coronavirus: You should listen to your own body
“Basically, if I have a vaccination and I want my body to react sensibly to it, then I would avoid any particular stress on the body,” says Hans-Michael Mühlefeld, referring to alcohol consumption and sporting activity after one Corona vaccination. One should give the body time and rest so that the body can break down the vaccine optimally. One or two days should usually be enough for this.
The German Green Cross points out that there are insufficient studies on this, but that one can orientate oneself here on one’s own well-being. Depending on your feelings, there is nothing to be said against sports. The effectiveness of the vaccination should not be restricted by moderate physical activity.

Corona vaccination: Medical recommendations on exercise and alcohol could change
“If you feel good, you can continue to stress yourself. I would recommend that you do not necessarily do competitive sports on the day of the vaccination. The next few days you make it depend on how you feel. If my arm hurts, I don’t necessarily have to play tennis. And if I’m feeling tired, maybe I shouldn’t necessarily go jogging. You just have to listen to your body, ”said Beate Sauter in an interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk.
Since corona vaccinations have only been given for a few months, medical recommendations may change over time. However, scientists and doctors are currently assuming that the corona vaccination is similar to other vaccinations.
