Not Toyota, This is the Manufacturer that Exports Most ‘Made’ Cars in Indonesia

Jakarta

When it comes to car sales in Indonesia, Toyota is indeed the king. Yes, car sales in the country are often colored by brands from the country of Sakura. Of the total car sales in Indonesia, 32.5% of them were contributed by Toyota.

However, when it comes to exports of cars ‘made’ in Indonesia, Toyota is not the largest. Referring to the export data released by the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the largest producer of cars labeled ‘Made in Indonesia’ is Daihatsu.

Throughout 2022, Daihatsu recorded an export figure of 160,254 or 33.8% of all brands. It should also be noted, the cars produced by Daihatsu are exported under the Toyota and Mazda brands. Thus, it is only natural that the export figure will be the highest.

The models are also quite diverse. For those who carry the Daihatsu emblem, there is the Gran Max Mini Bus and also the Gran Max pickup. The Gran Max was sent to Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia to Japan.

Then for Mazda, is the Mazda Bongo Mini Bus and Pick Up. The shape of the Mazda Bongo is exactly the same as the Gran Max, only the Mazda emblem. The commercial vehicle products are also rebadged on behalf of Toyota through Town Ace and Lite Ace.

Furthermore, Toyota rebadge cars from Daihatsu that are exported to foreign countries are Avanza, Rush, Raize, and also Wigo.

Under the new Daihatsu there is Toyota with 134,954 units. Toyota is known to export a number of cars sold in Indonesia to many countries. The models include Avanza, Fortuner, Innova, Yaris, Vios and Sienta. Toyota is also the only manufacturer that sends ‘made’ Indonesian cars to Australia via the Fortuner.

In third place is Mitsubishi Motors with exports of 65,743 units. Uniquely, the export figure which touched 60 thousand was only contributed by three models, namely the Mitsubishi Xpander, Xpander Cross and Nissan Livina. Yes, the Nissan Livina is produced together with its twin Xpander at the Mitsubishi factory in the Cikarang area.
