Not Swiss enough: Matterhorn is no longer allowed on the Toblerone packaging

The BBC reports that the producer of the pyramid-shaped chocolate bars the packaging will change. Mondelez, the company behind Toblerone, says it is replacing the image of the Matterhorn with “a generic mountain.”

Mondelez says it is obliged to do so, due to Swiss rules from 2017. They state that dairy products that are not exclusively made in Switzerland are not allowed to show Swiss icons. For other food products, a limit of 80 percent applies.

Toblerone has been around for 115 years. The ‘mountain-shaped’ chocolate first appeared on the market in 1908 in Bern, Switzerland. In the meantime, part of the chocolate is no longer made in the country, which is why the rules about ‘Swissness’ apply to the company.

Shape modified

The Mondelez company says it must move production to “meet global demand and grow the brand in the future,” it said in a statement to BBC News.

In 2016, the company adapted the form of Toblerone in the UK. The space between the characteristic triangles has been increased to save costs. After much ado, that change was reversed two years later.
