Pertamina limits the purchase of subsidized fuel oil (BBM). Diesel cars like the Innova-Fortuner are forbidden to drink subsidized diesel. The impact can damage the vehicle.
According to Didi Ahadi, Head of Dealer Technical Support for PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), the diesel cars currently being sold have adopted the Euro 4 emission standard. For this reason, diesel fuel that is more environmentally friendly is needed.
“For diesel, especially Euro 4, it is recommended to use diesel with 50 ppm sulfur,” said Didi to detikcom recently.
For this reason, diesel cars that have implemented Euro 4 at this time, such as the Innova and Fortuner, must use the appropriate fuel as well. At a minimum, the vehicle uses diesel fuel in the class of Pertamina Dex with a maximum sulfur content of 50 ppm.
Currently, Pertamina Dex already carries the Euro 4 standard. This type of fuel has a cetane number (CN) 53, which is higher than Dexlite which has CN 51 and diesel CN 48.
“If we go for 50 ppm, when we talk about Pertamina using Pertadex. Dexlite is not included. Because Pertamina Dex is specifically 50 ppm,” said Didi.
Solar itself contains a maximum of 2,500 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, while Dexlite has a maximum of 1,200 parts per million (ppm). Meanwhile, Pertamina Dex, which is already Euro 4, currently has a maximum sulfur content of 50 parts per million (ppm).
Apart from Pertamina, several private oil and gas companies also sell environmentally friendly diesel fuel. For example, Shell with its Shell V-Power Diesel product which has implemented the Euro 5 standard with a sulfur content of 10 ppm.
“If we use diesel fuel which is (maximum) 50 ppm, there is no problem. The smoke, the smell is different, the filter is also durable, the engine lasts. It means that it is proven that if you use diesel according to its designation, God willing, the engine will last,” said Didi.
If you use fuel that is not compatible with high sulfur content, the short-term impact will be reduced engine performance. Emissions are different.

Furthermore, the long-term impact of Fortuner-Innova if using subsidized diesel is damage to engine components. The most common is the filter gets dirty and clogged quickly.
