But insiders in Kuala Lumpur say discussion bilateral it sets a dangerous precedent.
When Malaysia last year agreed to hold one-on-one talks with rival prosecutors China over the Sea China South, it surprised observers.
Quoting South China Morning Post, Sunday (27/9/2020), Kuala Lumpur not the most vocal contender of Beijing’s claims in the region, they have long been reluctant to engage in such negotiations.
Instead, he is trying to chart a path between not becoming hostile to China and secretly pursuing his own plans for oil and gas exploration in contested waters.
They prefer to leave discussions of jurisdiction over resource-rich territories to regional groupings such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), where different countries can work together to have a bigger voice.
But in what is seen as a diplomatic coup for China, former foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah agreed at a meeting in September last year with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for one-on-one discussions.
With increasing tensions with the United States at Sea China South, Beijing has pushed Kuala Lumpur to make a breakthrough but with a year having passed since the agreement there has been no sign of progress – or more to come.
