Olympia 2024
At the moment, it is hard to imagine German screens without the 2024 Olympic Games. Whether on stream or on TV – athletes from all over the world inspire in numerous disciplines and literally captivate viewers. Germany has also already won one or two medals since the start of the competition.
After the equestrian stars, among others, were able to celebrate on the last day of the Olympics, they were not the only ones who had the opportunity to rejoice. Late at night, a real thriller unfolded in the middle of the hockey field – the outcome of which ultimately not only caused the emotions of the players themselves to run high. ARD presenter Esther Sedlaczek also did not miss the match in Paris.

ARD presenter shares private recording
While Esther usually presents the daily events of the sporting event in a very professional manner in front of the camera, she now shares an unexpectedly private recording on social media. A photo on her Instagram profile shows her watching one of the last competitions of the evening, spellbound, from behind the camera: the hockey match of the German men against Argentina.
The rare insight into the backstage activities of the TV production on Das Erste shows one thing above all: The successes of “Team D” are not without emotion for the presenter herself: In the photo, Esther is beaming with joy and throwing both arms in the air. Her obvious enthusiasm for what is happening in the game is also evident in the caption.
“These moments. Watching the final phase of men’s hockey with the Twam”she writes. A small spelling mistake has apparently crept into the short text, apparently in a fit of excitement. Instead of “Team”, it says “Twam” – an unintentional faux pas, but one that makes it clear how moved Esther Sedlaczek is at the end about the German team’s 3:2 win.

Olympic broadcast dominates TV schedule
The extent to which the Olympic Games are currently captivating the German public is also reflected in the numbers. The public broadcasters ARD and ZDF in particular are doing particularly well, as they were able to secure the rights to the broadcast. As “DWDL” previously reported, the program’s market share during the quarter-final match between the German women’s soccer team and Canada was a strong 30 percent at prime time.
However, the success of the sporting competition on free TV also affects the ratings of other broadcasters. Even the ARD itself recently had to take a hit during prime time. Instead of tuning in to the summer festival of “Do You Understand Fun?” on Saturday on Das Erste, viewers preferred to follow the Olympic events on ZDF.
The last few weeks have been one of ups and downs for Heinz Hoenig, who still has to undergo heart surgery. In July, to the horror of his wife Annika, he had to be resuscitated, but now he seems to be on the road to recovery.
