Not Robbery, This Is What Hosts Fear When ‘Selling’ Money

Jakarta

Dozens of hosts began to line up in the Kota Tua area, Jakarta. This money exchange service is starting to get busy as Eid approaches.

Every day, the hosts carry tens to tens of millions of money in their pockets. This can be risky, given the absence of special safeguards. When asked if the hosts were worried about the threat of robbery, they gave a normal response.

“We’re busy here, so just take care of each other,” said Yogi, one of the hosts to detik.comSaturday (23/4/2022).

In fact, according to Yogi, he is more worried about the weather constraints that often hinder him. Turnover can go down when the weather is not favorable. “Who wants to get out of the rain, it’s jammed again,” he said.

In one day, Yogi can exchange between IDR 5-15 million per day. If it’s crowded, the nominal is even greater. The profit that Yogi takes is IDR 10,000 for every IDR 100,000 exchange. This moment occurs D-5 to D-3 before Idul Fitri.

“When it’s crowded, it’s when the bank is closed. It can be up to Rp. 50 million,” said Yogi.

Meanwhile, Rianto, another host in Kota Tua admitted that he could exchange between Rp. 2 million and Rp. 10 million per day. The turnover is starting to improve compared to last year. “Just this year, last year, at the beginning of the pandemic, it was quiet,” he said.

Unlike Yogi, Rianto made a profit of Rp. 15,000 for the exchange of Rp. 100,000. The Rp 5,000 denomination is the most sought after by the public.

“The most selling is Rp. 5,000, so if Rp. 5,000 is rarely negotiable, it is also difficult to find. At the bank, Rp. 5,000 is most often used up,” said Yogi. Meanwhile, the Rp 20,000 denomination was the least desirable.
