Not only the Netherlands is struggling with staff shortages in the catering industry

“Being underpaid has always been a problem, but for the first time it really causes problems. I see signs everywhere at cafes that they are looking for people. Spain is now even looking to see if people should come from outside,” says correspondent Rop salt mountain.

But it is precisely young people who leave for the north of Europe, because the working conditions are better there. “What is offered in the Netherlands, for example, they cannot get here. It often involves a permanent contract and the salaries are much higher than here.”

Spain has a problem with that, but too little is happening to keep young people in the country.

“The minimum wage has now gone up, but that is still only about 1000 euros per month. I see few people in the ministry. The staff is running from under their bodies, because no one else is hired because of all the shortages. It affects not only cafes and restaurants, but also transport, agriculture and construction. For years people have been exploited in these sectors, with the result that no one in those companies sees a future for themselves.”
