The result of a corona study shows that not only does the lungs suffer from the virus, it also affects the heart. “We did not expect this at the beginning,” says Geert Meyfroidt of UZ Leuven.
In all cases, these are results that have been reported in people who have died from the coronavirus, Meyfroidt emphasizes. “I haven’t seen any studies where they took a lung biopsy from someone who survived,” he says in “New Facts” on Radio 1. “That’s a dangerous procedure, of course.”
Up to 40 percent of autopsy reports report that the deceased had died from clots in the blood. “The blood clots are mainly in the lungs and in the arteries to the lungs. That means that the right side of our heart that has to irrigate the lungs also gets difficult,” explains Meyfroidt. Not only the big clots are dangerous, also the small clots in the small blood vessels can do a lot of damage.
Risk patients
“People who are at risk of clotting are people who are overweight, have diabetes or cardiovascular disease,” says Meyfroidt. “We think that’s the explanation for so many people on intensive care with Covid-19 who also have those other conditions . “
