batampos.co.id A person is often not aware that their blood sugar is already high, so they are at risk of developing diabetes. Though diabetes is a threat to other diseases such as heart disease and stroke.

Symptoms are often not realized or considered natural, such as easy thirst, easy hunger, and a lot of urination. Try to be aware of other diabetes symptoms in addition to these symptoms.

Chairman of the Jakarta Diabetes Meeting 2021 Dr. dr. Wismandari Wisnu, Sp.PD, KEM, explained that diabetes is also a disease that needs proper management to reduce the risk of complications from cardiovascular disease. The 2018 Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) noted that the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus according to the results of blood sugar examinations increased from 6.9 percent in 2013 to 8.5 percent in 2018.

This figure shows that only about 25 percent of diabetics know that they have diabetes. The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in the population aged 15 years reaches 10.9 percent. That number has almost doubled in the last 10 years.

According to WHO estimates in 2016, diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia, which causes 6 percent of all total deaths. It is estimated, this diabetes will also cause the loss of Indonesia’s economic output of 0.2 trillion dollars from 2012 to 2034.

“Simply put, diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar or glucose,” he said online at the Diabetes and Dyslipidemia press conference, Thursday (12/8).

“Diabetes, what happens is excess sugar in the blood and this will lead to more serious health problems,” said dr. Tourists.

According to him, diabetes itself is divided into two, namely Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 occurs when the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells. Whereas in type 2 diabetes, the body cannot use insulin normally and in the end the pancreas will fail to produce insulin.

“Type 2 DM is often asymptomatic to cause complications,” he said.

What are the symptoms?

There are classic symptoms of type 2 diabetes, namely frequent thirst (polyuria), frequent urination and urination a lot (polydipsia), frequent hunger (polyphagia), and weight loss for no apparent reason. Other symptoms can include feeling tired quickly, tingling, itching, blurred vision, erectile dysfunction in men, and itching in the genitals in women.

“It is important to immediately see a doctor if you feel these symptoms. This is important, because diabetes can be one of the causes of more dangerous complications,” he explained.

In addition, increased blood sugar levels are one component of the metabolic syndrome which is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes. A person with diabetes is twice as likely to suffer from heart disease or stroke than someone who does not have diabetes.(jpg)
