Thiruvananthapuram: An expert team has submitted an investigation report to the government in the case of a woman in Kozhikode who left a pair of scissors in her stomach. A detailed investigation revealed that the scissors did not belong to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. In 2017, the woman underwent surgery at the medical college.
The scissors were found in the stomach of a young woman named Harsheena Ashraf, a native of Thamarassery. The surgical instrument was in the woman’s stomach for five years. It was discovered that there were scissors in the stomach during an examination at a private hospital following physical disturbances.
Documents including Instrumental Register of Kozhikode Medical College were inspected. No missing scissors could be found in this. Before the surgery was done in the medical college, the surgery was done in 2012 and 2016 in Thamarassery. As there was no instrumental register at that time, the medical team was unable to locate the scissors. A forensic examination was also conducted to ascertain the age of the scissors.
Following the complaint filed by the woman, Health Minister Veena George conducted an investigation with two committees. But the investigation did not find that the scissors belonged to the Kozhikode Medical College. After the first request, an expert committee was tasked to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report. The investigation team included surgery and gynecology doctors from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Thrissur District Hospital.
