Not many children have corona. But Medina (1) is in the hospital with it

Not many children are hospitalized because of the coronavirus. In recent weeks, 1,836 Dutch people have been admitted. Only 15 cases involved children aged 0 to 14 years.

The complaints started on Monday

So there is little chance that a child with a corona will end up in the hospital. But that was the case with Medina from Oegstgeest. Grandma Brigitte tells RTL Nieuws that the first complaints occurred on Monday. Not only with Medina, but with the whole family.

“They coughed a lot and were stuffy. But the youngest, Medina, was the most troubled. She didn’t get much air, so they quickly went to the doctor.” The doctor immediately sent little Medina to the hospital. A test was done there. The result had to be waited at home.

Brigitte: “A call was made at 10:30 pm: Medina had tested positive for the corona virus. Her breathing was getting weaker, so she was asked if Samira wanted to come to the hospital with her daughter right away.”

Special department for corona patients

Nurses in protective clothing were already waiting for Samira and her daughter Medina in the hospital parking lot. The two had to go to a special department for corona patients where Medina has been oxygenating for three days.

Grandma Brigitte: “The fear we now feel is terrible. Today Medina has been given two liters of oxygen. If that doesn’t work, she has to go to intensive care and Samira cannot go with her.”

How many children have the coronavirus in the Netherlands?

RIVM published new figures this afternoon with more information about the age of corona patients in the Netherlands. This showed that to date, 23 children aged 0 to 4 years have fallen ill with corona. 10 of them had to be hospitalized.

In the age group of 5 to 9 years, six children fell ill, one of whom had to go to the hospital. In the age group from 10 to 14, 30 children were ill, 4 of whom had to go to hospital. In the 15 to 19 age group, more children fell ill: 42 teenagers in total, 4 of whom had to go to hospital.

No child has yet died of the coronavirus in the Netherlands. In addition, RIVM emphasizes that most young people hardly get any complaints when infected. For example, most young people will not even notice that they are sick if they are infected with the virus.

Grandma Brigitte finds it heartbreaking that she now cannot physically support her daughter and granddaughter. “I want to hug my daughter and granddaughter, hold them, be there for them. But no one should be in that department. I’m grateful we have Facetime these days, but it’s so bad that I can’t just go over there. my daughter is also having a hard time with her. She just said: Mom, I would really like you to just hold me. “

Just stay in

It is not clear how Medina and Samira contracted the virus. They have not been in a risk area and have barely left the house. The fact that Brigitte now sees others walking around outside happily as if nothing is wrong, hurts her. “Normally I wouldn’t just tell my story, but now I want to send a message. Just stay home with your kids, this could happen to you too.”

“Play games, sing, make it cozy in the house so that children don’t get bored, but stay indoors. And if you want to get a breath of fresh air, do it somewhere where nobody else is. We have to fight this virus and we can We can only succeed if we do this together. We have to stay strong and just keep this up for a while. Because what we experience, nobody wants. “
