In the following ranking, you will find games that have become classics in just a few months, as well as somewhat neglected projects that deserve the attention of players.
There can be no mistaking the fictional king of video games this year. He has become a dark fantasy carving Elder Ring. If you remember the depressed world Dark souls or perhaps a Victorian hell inside Transmitted by blood and you liked it, this will be the piece for you. The now legendary studio From Software has created a breathtaking world that combines the aesthetics and disgust of the aforementioned titles with fantasy elements and a fantastic open world, which you know for example in the children’s version from The Legend of Zelda: Wild Breath.
The game will offer a total of 157 different breathtaking bosses, countless dungeons, secrets, quests, equipment, in short, everything a true RPG fan could wish for. As is the norm in the genre, each player will find their own style of play and their own way to defeat the terrifying giant bosses. You’ll probably just be scratching your head at the story, which, if you haven’t played the previous games from the From Software workshop, won’t make much sense to you and will be too mysterious for you. But this confusion is balanced by a magical world, thought out to the smallest detail, which on an area of u200bu200b30 square kilometers has no competition in video games.
We’ll be with rough men and dangerous monsters for a while. It was one of the most anticipated games of the year God of war Ragnarök – continuation of the game God of War since 2018 and a game forged exclusively for the PlayStation. Take on the role of Kratos, the well-known fighter of the gods from the series God of War and his son Atreus.
While it may seem similar, it’s the father-son relationship that is central to the game. Only then is it a question of defeating a considerable number of monsters and bosses from the Norse mythologies. Also for this, we would not be afraid to call the game a story-adventure rather than an action game, where you simply have to hack your way with an ax here and there.
In addition to a great story, you will enjoy impressive visuals, references to Norse mythology or cut scenes, which traditionally look more like a movie than a game for PlayStation games. The upside is that, unlike many other games on this list, it has God of war Ragnarök also the Czech localization.
In total, with Kratos and his son, you will visit nine breathtaking worlds that have a myriad of side quests. And you’ll also face an interesting constellation of monsters and supernatural beings. If you’re after real fun for long winter evenings and don’t want to fight and die like the bosses Elden Ringuthen this will be the game just for you.
If we were talking about the biggest video game surprise of the year, many gamers would probably reach for it Stray. An unobtrusive action-adventure in which you play as a cat. This in itself is a unique concept in video games.
You are an unnamed stray cat walking through a strangely empty, almost dystopian world. You will have to solve tricky puzzles, but also successfully overcome the action and stealth passages offered by the game. A little weaker is unfortunately the story, which tries to draw you into a great mystery, leaving you quite disappointed in the end.
There are no side quests either. The character dialogues are repetitive and you can finish the whole thing in four or five hours. But honestly, it’s an afternoon that will be worth it.
SIFU is a game from a different era. From a time when not everyone focused on crafting, multiplayer, open world, microtransactions and who knows what else. SIFU is a game that tries to do one thing over and over and does it well.
At its core, he’s actually such a fighter. As a boy you witnessed your father’s murder and now, in your 20s, you are determined to avenge him.
But there’s a problem. You can practically not die. You may start out in your 20s, but an imaginary death ages you a year. So if you die twenty times, suddenly you have forty. If you defeat certain enemies, your age will decrease again.
The SIFU combat system is a well thought out combat system that can work even with age. Some skills may be limited by age, on the other hand, if you’re playing as a grandparent, you’ll have a hard time getting past that. But most important is how smooth the single shots and battles are. This is something the developers have managed to do, and it’s something that is difficult to translate into text.
Thanks to its great system, the game will make you think a lot about individual fights. SIFU isn’t really a fighting game where you mash all the different buttons together and hope your opponent falls to the ground. If you respect these premises, the story of SIFU will terribly entertain you. This year we have not gone a better way to take revenge.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
If you don’t feel like beating up, killing or navigating a dystopian world, I have a recommendation for a brilliant platformer that will keep young and old entertained. From the world of Japanese giant Nintendo, you surely know the Italian plumber Mario, but the second most popular platform hero is a pink ball named Kirby.
Kirby got his first game after thirty years of existence. Kirby is a glutton, able to inhale most enemies and copy their characteristics. He can consume entire objects such as a car or a traffic cone. This skill helps you progress through levels, solve logic puzzles, you know.
You can complete the game aimed mostly at kids in eight hours and you won’t have too many complications. You will definitely have fun. Kirby and the Forgotten Land for example, it offers a surprising amount of side content and minigames for a platformer.
Plus, there’s also two-player co-op multiplayer, an ideal combination for parent and child. The only downside to the game’s beauty is the boring boss fights.
If there was an award for the best game of the year, maybe even the decade, Repentance it would have no competition. At the same time, it’s a title gamers didn’t expect from Obsidian Entertainment studio, known for games like Pillars of Eternity or The Outer Worlds.
Repentance is a great detective story set in the world of modern Europe. What sounds like relative boredom is made special by the unique graphic elaboration, which combines modern writing and chronicle illumination from the same period.
The entire game is set in a 16th century Bavarian village, where time seems to stand still. Although letterpress printing is widespread, the monks of the local scriptorium transcribe the books faithfully. And you assume the role of the wandering artist and old bachelor Andreas Mahler, who is trying to finish his life’s work in the monastery.
Instead, you must become a detective and solve a series of murders that begin to plague the quiet Alpine town. Besides the unique graphic elaboration, you will be thrilled without exaggeration by the brilliant story, the living world that will allow you to take an excursion into the history of modern Europe and even the gameplay, which is not the rule for adventure games.
You just have to have a certain amount of patience, because Repentance as a game it is relatively long and you will need fifteen or twenty hours to finish it. At the same time, you won’t find any voice acting here, instead the dialogues are scratched directly onto the screen by a quill, which will make some players nervous.
The author of this text personally loves cyberpunk and would not be forgiven for depriving the reader of a tip on what is probably the best sci-fi game of the year. Sleeping Citizen is another title that proves that the line between a good novel and a video game is very thin these days.
This is a cyberpunk adventure where you will explore issues of humanity, freedom, intergalactic capitalism, etc. You yourself are a sleeper, a synthetic being who is only emulated as a real person. You have no rights, only obligations to your manufacturer. If you rebel, you have a tracking device installed that will help them find you. Take poison for that.
The whole story takes place on the half-forgotten space station The Eye, mostly with the help of dialogues and virtual dice rolls. Here you will work, eat and try to figure out what to do with your artificial life. There is always a virtual sword of Damocles hanging over you within certain game mechanics and deadlines that you simply have to meet, so you can only choose a certain set of tasks.
Again, it’s a mix of dialogue, possibility, and decision making. The whole thing is very approximate, but interesting and engaging, just like a good book. If you have enjoyed text adventure games in the past, you must Sleeping Citizen try.
Games 2022: who didn’t make it?
Of course, other great games came out in 2022, but not all of them made it into our selection. In the context of honorable mentions and Christmas gift suggestions, we wouldn’t want to deprive you of suggestions for the following titles:
A Plague Tale: Requiem – A continuation of medieval European stealth action, which many gamers loved for its story. We advise you not to play if you are afraid of mice.
Chronicles of Xenoblade 3 – The long-awaited continuation of the popular RPG, in which you will spend literally tens to hundreds of hours.
Worship of the Lamb – One of the surprises of the year. In this cult leadership simulator / roguelike action game, you take on the role of a lamb trying to uncover the truth and take revenge on the four gods who arranged his execution.
Strange horticulture – Detective where you will solve a mystery in a remote town at the turn of the century with the help of selling flowers. Sounds crazy, but the game is absolutely brilliant.
