Even though varian Delta or B1617.2 from India is said to be more easily transmitted with severe symptoms, Task Force COVID-19 emphasized that there was no certainty about the variant causing a spike in cases in a number of regions of Indonesia. However, it is certain, this spike is the impact of the homecoming community in Indonesia Eid 2021.
“In our opinion, the increase in transmission that is currently happening is clearly related to mobility and crowds related to the long holiday, namely Eid al-Fitr. The pattern is the same as events like last year’s long holiday,” explained the spokesman for the COVID-19 Task Force Prof. Wiku Adisasmito at a press conference. virtual National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Thursday (17/6/2021).
He said, from early February to mid-May 2021, COVID-19 cases in Indonesia decreased with hospital occupancy (BOR) reaching 30 percent of the average in Indonesia. However, after the Lebaran holiday, cases rose again according to the calculations that had been made regarding the impact of the homecoming community.
Until now, there is no certainty about the potential for the Delta variant to cause a spike in cases in Indonesia. However, given the current conditions, plus the continuous discovery of new variants, including the Delta variant, it is very likely that this new variant will contribute to the spike in cases.
“The high transmission rate and the implementation of WGS (Whole Genome Sequencing) and certain variants such as those from India prove that certain variant viruses are already circulating in Indonesia,” said Prof. Wiku.
“But to find out whether the cause of the increase in cases is due to variants or an increase in cases related to long holidays, we can clearly see it from long holidays. Further research is needed to link WGS from certain variants to the increase in cases,” he concluded
