Although the most common cause of rectal bleeding is hemorrhoids, bloody stools can also be caused by cancerous or precancerous conditions in which precancerous polyps are near the end of the large intestine, and can mimic bleeding from hemorrhoids.

“That’s why early detection of colon cancer is necessary, especially if you have risk factors,” he added.

The Consultant Internal Medicine Specialist for Gastroenterology-Hepatology Mayapada Hospital Tangerang, Dr Hendra Nurjadin, SpPD-KGEH, said that early detection of colon cancer in individuals without complaints can begin at the age of 50 years and over if there is no family history of colon cancer.

“But, if there is a family history of colon cancer, early detection can begin at the age of 40 years and over,” he continued.

Early detection of colon cancer is now possible with a procedure called Capsule Endoscopy, which is a procedure performed by taking pictures of the digestive tract by swallowing a small wireless camera inside the capsule. The size of the capsule is the size of a vitamin that is usually taken.

As the capsule travels through the digestive tract, the camera takes thousands of images which are transmitted to a recorder worn on a belt.
