Not just Bavaria and Wolves: the top of the women’s Bundesliga

There are three points between the top five teams in the Bundesliga in women’s football. In addition to the usual favorites FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg, other candidates have solidified themselves for the top spot this year.

Eintracht Frankfurt in particular had already shown in two duels against the Munich women that the women from Main can be expected. Frankfurt even won the league duel between the two teams 3-2 and there was a hard-fought 2-4 defeat in the round of 16 in the DFB Cup. The Frankfurt women are currently showing stable performances, in the storm, Laura Freilang with six and Lara Prasnikar with five hits stand out. At the age of 23, both are in their prime footballer age and complement each other very strongly.

The only two defeats of Eintracht were against the wolves and the next team that tries an attack upwards: TSG Hoffenheim. Even if it is anything but easy to survive against top clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona in the Champions League, TSG plays a good role in the league. There were home wins against fellow rivals from Wolfsburg and Frankfurt in October, which explains the good starting position. The renewed CL qualification will not be easier, however, as the next club is knocking in the form of Turbine Potsdam.

The heyday in Potsdam may be over, but the team’s talent is currently making high goals seem within reach. With 19 points, Turbine, who won four championships in a row between 2008/09 and 2011/12, is currently fifth and just three points away from Wolfsburg. For the Champions League it would have to be at least third place, so anything is possible for the team of coach Sofian Chahed, the former Bundesliga player of Hertha BSC and Hannover 96. Most recently there was a 3: 3 against the aforementioned Hoffenheimers.

Such results show the current performance density of the league. Bayern and Wolfsburg are still the ultimate in their squad density, but both can stumble with the other members of the top five, as the latest results impressively show. It is to be hoped that the championship fight will remain an exciting one this year and that the games for the Champions League qualification will also include the same fight that is currently being offered.
