Ricarda Biebl has had enough! She has been the owner of the “Schipperhus” restaurant in the Baltic Sea resort of Dierhagen on the Darß for almost four years and is known locally for her delicious food and the nice ambience. But now she is causing a stir with a notice. Because children under the age of 12 are now banned from the Biebl house!
Biebl no longer welcomes children under the age of 12
“Dear guests, due to many unpleasant experiences in the past, we have decided to no longer host families with children under the age of 12.” This notice at the “Schipperhus” restaurant is causing a stir on the internet. Because the owner Biebl refuses to continue serving children in her restaurant.
The reason for this: “The noise. The discussions between the parents and my service staff when they draw the parents’ attention to the fact that the children are disturbing,” says Biebl in an interview with RTL reporter Jens Schwarck. Even regular guests are increasingly turning their backs on her and the “Schipperhus”, she says.

Well, children are just children, they can be loud, cry, whine, refuse to eat and, and, and. But the stories that Biebl tells are probably every restaurant owner’s nightmare. The walls have been painted, although there are coloring books for the little ones. Ketchup and mayo stuck to the upholstered furniture, food had been deliberately stepped on the floor, small children ran barefoot across the tables. “The incidents just happen too often,” says Biebl, “sometimes every day.”
For two years she and her husband, with whom Biebl has run the “Schipperhus” since 2018, struggled with a possible ban on children. Again and again they rejected the idea. At the beginning of the current season, Biebl tried one last time to open the restaurant to children as well, but after only two weeks she pulled the ripcord. That’s why it’s now: Children under the age of 12 are no longer allowed in. However, Biebl makes it clear that the kids are not to blame for her. “Parents are more concerned with themselves than with the children,” she says. But the service staff from the “Schipperhus” is not responsible for keeping the little ones busy.
Strong tailwind on Facebook
The topic is causing a sensation on the internet. Restaurants have tried to exclude children in the past – like the restaurant “Oma’s Küche und Quartier” on Rügen in 2018 – but this time there is criticism as well as praise. While some describe the “Schipperhus” on Facebook as “hostile to children”, others say: the right decision! “Very good and courageous decision by the innkeepers!” writes a father, for example. Another user, herself the mother of a child, also has no problem with the age limit. “Keep it up and don’t let it get you down!” she comments on Facebook. “If I’m ever in the north, we’ll be happy to come.
