The 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade has begun and features innovations that stand out from a nearly century-old tradition. This year, two new giant helium-filled balloons make their debut: Spider-Man, the famous Marvel superhero, and Minnie Mouse, one of Disney’s most iconic characters, providing appeal for all generations.
As for the floats, creativity and visual narrative take center stage. One of the most anticipated floats is dedicated to Rao’s, the historic food brand, which features a knight facing a dragon, both created with elements of real pasta, including noodles and other typical shapes of this food. Another float pays tribute to the Bronx Zoo, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary with an artistic representation of animals such as a tiger, giraffe, zebra and gorilla.
Additionally, the parade will feature performances by artists such as Jennifer Hudson and Idina Menzel, recognized for their talents in music and film. The presence of the New York Liberty team, WNBA champion, also stands out, reinforcing the link of the event with relevant figures of current culture and sports.

The parade follows a carefully planned route spanning 2.5 miles, crossing iconic areas of Manhattan. It begins at 8:30 a.m. on the Upper West Side and culminates around noon at Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square, located on 34th Street. This final stretch of the route becomes the main stage, where the highlights performances, creating a backdrop that combines tradition and spectacle.
The event is designed to attract both spectators in the streets and those who follow it from their homes through television. It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the celebratory atmosphere that marks the official start of the Christmas season in the United States.
The weather forecast for the day of the parade includes rain, temperatures close to 4°C and winds of approximately 16 kph. These conditions are considered acceptable for the flight of giant balloons, such as Snoopy, Bluey and other public favorite characters.
However, organizers will keep a strict watch on wind speed to ensure the safety of the event. According to New York City regulations, full-size balloons cannot fly if sustained winds exceed 23 mph or if gusts reach more than 35 mph. This regulation, established after previous incidents, ensures that balloons do not pose a risk to attendees or nearby properties.

The first Macy’s parade was held on November 27, 1924 in New York City. It was devised by Macy’s department store employees, many of whom were European immigrants. Inspired by the holiday traditions of their home countries, they sought to replicate that spirit in the bustling American city.
