Jakarta –
China is currently experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases. This surge is alleged to have occurred as a result of China’s lifting of strict “Zero-COVID” Corona management rules that had previously lasted for three years.
Recently, predictions have been circulating that there will be 1.5 million cases of death from COVID-19 in China in the next six months. The research was published on Thursday (12/22/2022) in the medRxiv preprint service by researchers from the University of Macau and Harvard Medical School.
However, data published by Worldometers, not China, topped the list for the highest number of daily Corona cases over the past week. On the Worldometers website, China ranks 14th with 28,309 cases of COVID-19 in the past 7 days.
Given that in recent weeks, Chinese authorities have said they are not publishing daily data on the Corona as cases in that country have increased significantly.
Meanwhile, here are the 5 countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases over the past week, referenced by Worldometers as of Friday (30/12/2022):
Japan
Referring to data from Worldometers, Japan has recorded 1,190,504 cases of COVID-19 in the past week. With these figures, Japan recorded an 8% increase in COVID-19 compared to the previous week.
As quoted by Reuters, in the past seven days to Wednesday (28/12), Japan has recorded the largest confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in the world and the second highest number of deaths after the United States. This refers to the calculation of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Due to the peak of COVID-19 in China, travelers who test positive for COVID-19 will need to quarantine for one week in a designated facility.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said there is growing concern in Japan because it is difficult to detect the COVID-19 situation in China in detail.
South Korea
South Korea is ranked as the second country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the past week with 464,750 cases, according to Worldometers as of Friday (30/12).
Quoted by Insider, local newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported that authorities plan to require travelers from China to submit a negative COVID-19 result at least 48 hours before arriving in South Korea.
The report also said that travelers from China could be subject to additional quarantine measures due to the increase in cases in the country.
