Not cheap cheap laptop – Digi.no

Microsoft has just launched its Surface Laptop Go 2, a portable ultraportable that is supposed to be made specifically to appeal to those – shall we say price-conscious.

Exactly that is also noticeable on the specifications.

Surface Laptop Go 2 is available in Norway in the following editions:

  • With 4 GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128 GB SSD storage, for NOK 6,990.
  • With 8 GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128 GB SSD storage, for NOK 7,990.
  • With 8 GB LPDDR4x RAM and 256 GB SSD storage, for NOK 8,990.

4 GB of RAM is probably at least made these days, especially if you are going to use the computer for something other than light browsing and email, so most people should in practice consider a different version than the absolute cheapest.

These PCs are said to be available in Norway from and including Friday 4 June 2022. In addition, there will be a version with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage, but the price and date of it is not yet known. In the Norwegian market, moreover, only the platinum version will be available.

The cheapest version does not get a fingerprint reader in the on button, but the other models will get it. However, Windows Hello should be supported in all editions.

Previous generation Intel processor

In addition to storage and working memory, the machine gets an i5-1135G7 processor with four cores, and a 12.4 “screen with 1536 x 1024 pixels resolution. The graphics solution is Intel’s own built-in Iris Xe-Graphics. It is suitable for everyday use and simple or older games, but for more demanding tasks it will fall short.

It may seem strange that Microsoft for a new PC model has chosen the previous generation Intel processor, but there are probably several reasons for this, and most will probably result in costs. Not only will an older processor model be cheaper to purchase, but it will also not be quite as hot as Intel’s 12 generation is known to be. This potentially saves a few kroner on both the processor and the cooling of it.

Battery and weight

The size of the battery is not stated, but Microsoft promises up to 13.5 hours of battery life in normal use, whatever it may be. The charger that comes with provides 39 watts and should be able to charge the battery to 80 percent in one hour.

The weight is stated at 1127 grams – that is, the machine is a clear lightweight, but still not the absolute lightest of its kind.

On the communication front, the machine features Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Of the ports, it gets a USB-A and a USB-C, in addition to a 3.5 mm headphone output. Here you need a dongle to connect more than is absolutely necessary, in other words.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about it all is what Microsoft has arranged for the user to be able to replace:

  • Screen cover
  • The cover by the keyboard and touchpad
  • The feet on the underside
  • SSD storage
  • Surflink-kabel

In addition, the battery must be replaceable, only not by the user himself.
