Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – North Korea (North) showcased intercontinental ballistic missiles at a military parade on Saturday (10/10/2020) local time. The exhibition is the first in two years.
Citing CNBC International on Sunday (11/10/2020), analysts said that the missile carried by the 11-axle truck will become one of the largest intercontinental ballistic missiles in the world once it becomes operational.
“This missile is a monster,” said Deputy Director of the Open Nuclear Network, Melissa Hanham.
North Korea also featured the Hwasong-15, which is the longest-range missile North Korea has ever tested. Other missiles on display will also be used in submarines.
In the run-up to the parade, officials in South Korea (South Korea) and the United States (US) said that the event, held to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the ruling North Korean Labor Party, was used by Kim Jong Un to demonstrate the strategic weapon he had promised earlier this year. .
A senior US administration official called the display of the intercontinental ballistic missiles “disappointing” and called on the US government to negotiate to achieve total denuclearization.
The parade featured North Korean ballistic missiles for the first time since Kim Jong-Un began meeting international leaders, including US President Donald Trump, in 2018.
“We will continue to build up a national defense force and deterrence of war in self-defense,” Kim said.
He did not mention directly the US or the now stalled denuclearization talks. Kim blamed international sanctions, typhoons and the new coronavirus for causing Covid-19 for preventing it from fulfilling promises of economic progress.
“I am ashamed that I have never been able to properly repay you for your immense trust. My efforts and devotion are not enough to bring people out of difficult livelihoods,” said Kim.
The video shows Kim appearing as the clock strikes midnight. Dressed in a gray suit and tie, he waves into the crowd and receives flowers from children while being surrounded by military officials at Pyongyang’s recently renovated Kim Il Sung Square.
Kim talked for almost half an hour. Often Kim was seen sweating despite the cool morning air, shedding tears when thanking the troops, and smiling and laughing when he saw the missiles.
Experts say the new, larger missile is likely designed to carry multiple MIRVs – a ballistic missile load carrying multiple warheads -, enabling it to strike more targets and making interception more difficult.
