Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Many believe that one of the dairy products, Milk Bear can fight the Covid-19 virus. However, it turns out that there is something that is proven to be effective in preventing and treating it, namely breast milk or breast milk.
A number of studies have been conducted and produce the same thing if breast milk has the ability to prevent and treat. It also denied a number of other claims to stop mothers exposed to Covid-19 from breastfeeding their babies.

The first research came from URMC (University of Rochester Medical Center) and a number of other universities, with the title “Characterization of SARS-CoV-2 RNA, Antibodies, and Neutralizing Capacity in Milk Produced by Women with COVID-19”.
The research team analyzed 37 milk samples from 18 women who tested positive for Covid-19. The research team did not find the milk samples contained the virus and about two-thirds contained two virus-specific antibodies, quoted from the official URMC website, Tuesday (6/7/2021).
“We found high levels of IgA, a common antibody in blood and other body fluids, in breast milk. IgA migrates in mucosal transfer, thereby promoting maternal antibody transfer,” says Mark Sangster, PhD. He and his colleague David Topham PhD are research professors in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and are tasked with measuring antibody levels.
This study found that mothers who were exposed to Covid-19 were still safe to breastfeed their babies. They will not transmit and can even provide innate antibodies that neutralize the Covid-19 virus.
Mothers with the virus and their babies no longer need to be separated. Previously by a number of major health organizations gave conflicting advice regarding this separation of mother and baby.
According to Bridget Young, co-investigator and assistant professor in URMC’s Department of Pediatrics, separation of mother and baby can eventually be done if medically necessary, quoted Scitechdaily.
“However, this issue is very confusing to practitioners who do not have sufficient evidence. These preliminary results show that breast milk from mothers who have Covid-19 contains specific and active antibodies against the virus and does not transmit the virus through breast milk. This is good news,” he said.
Young hopes that this study on breastfeeding and Covid-19 can be replicated by a larger group. In addition, it seems that research on breastfeeding and Covid-19 will not stop here because Young said it is necessary to understand the impact of vaccines on breast milk in the same way.
