Rafael Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon semi-final – walkover for Nick Kyrgios
That confirms Nadal Thursday night. The Spanish veteran played on Wednesday until the semifinals where he was to meet Nick Kyrgios. In the victory against Taylor Fritz, the Spaniard struggled with pain along the way, but managed to complete the match. Afterwards, he revealed that he had contracted a tear in his stomach along the way.
– I spent the whole day thinking about what I should do, but it makes no sense to continue. The injury is getting worse and worse, Nadal said at a press conference.
– The decision was made because I do not think I can win such a match. I can not make my normal movements when I serve. Yesterday I did not want to retire in the middle of a quarterfinal, and I found a way to finish. I’m proud of that, but withdrawing is the best thing for me and my future, he added.
Nadal’s decision means that Kyrgios will automatically advance to the final at Wimbledon. There he meets either Novak Djokovic or Cameron Norrie.
