A study published in the journal Letters of Earth and Planetary Sciences revealed that the material covers an area of ​​1.8 million square kilometers (700,000 sq mi) and is located in the upper mantle region, the layer between the core Land which is dense and very hot with a thin outer layer, the skin of the Earth.

Reported by Sputnik News, a team from Royal Holloway University in London used a network of seismic sensors to find the mass of the carbonate. The research used seismic waves, which are capable of traveling at different speeds and angles through the material, to scan the mantle.

“Beneath the Western US is a partially filled underground vessel with liquid carbonate. This is the result of one of the Pacific Ocean tectonic plates being pushed under the Western US, experiencing partial warming thanks to gases such as CO2 and the H2O present in minerals dissolved in it,” said Sash Hier-Majumder, lead author and study co-author, senior lecturer in geophysics at Royal Holloway.

What’s more, the study says the recently discovered boiler shows that Earth’s upper mantle contains 10,000 times the amount of carbon, carbon dioxide gas, that was released into the atmosphere in 2011 primarily through human activities.

“Making this 1% CO2 to the atmosphere would be equivalent to burning 2.3 trillion barrels of oil,” added Sash Hier-Majumder. For those concerned about the impact of the release of carbon found at the surface through volcanic eruptions, the science team has allayed those concerns.

The study added that it could have an insignificant impact on the rate of climate change, also pointing out that there is no evidence of the emergence of carbonate volcanoes.
