Having studied the car market in 162 countries, Focus2move experts have compiled a list of the most bought cars in the world in 2022. It is curious that more than half of them are “Asian” – cars from Japan and Korea. Electric cars and creations of the American automotive industry are also quite popular and find a place in this Top 11. But first there’s:
1.Toyota Corolla
At the top is the legendary Toyota Corolla. This Japanese sedan was chosen by 840,000 buyers. The Corolla is ahead of the competition by a wide margin. And this despite the fact that the automaker has had serious production problems this year. But compared to the previous year, demand for Corolla is down 5.6% this year. The compact car was first produced in 1966.
2.Toyota RAV4
This SUV confidently rises to the list of best-selling electrified cars. This is due to the significant changes in the industry. So, in second place is still not an electric car, but the hybrid Toyota RAV4. In October, a new version was launched for the Japanese car market. This crossover was bought by 654,000 people in 2022. In the SUV market, RAV4 has become the most purchased car. But compared to last year, its sales decreased by 15.6%. The compact Japanese crossover was born in 1994.
3. Ford F Series
In third place in the world ranking are the large American Ford F-Series pickup trucks. In the United States they are the most purchased. But in 2022, sales fell by 11.4%. Ford Motor Company’s line of full-size pickup trucks has been in production for over 70 years. The first Ford F-series is the most successful car in the company’s history.
4. Tesla Model Y
And here are the full-fledged electric cars. The fourth place is occupied by the Tesla Model Y. This electric-powered SUV was chosen by 531,000 buyers in 2022, which allowed the model to rise from 22nd to 4th place, showing an increase of as much as 101.6% . The electric SUV was first presented in March 2019. Series production started in January 2020 at a plant in the US city of Fremont. Delivered to users since March 2020.
5. Tesla Model 3
Compared to the previous year, sales of this electric car increased by 22.6% to 492,000 units. The five-seater electric sedan, developed on a new platform, was released at the end of March 2016. The model has quite roomy trunks due to the lack of an internal combustion engine.
6.Toyota Camry
The Camry business-class sedan from the Japanese company Toyota was purchased 489,000 times in 2022. This allowed this car to move to the sixth line of the list. Overall, compared to last year, Camry sales decreased by 4.9%. In 218, the eighth generation Toyota Camry was released. Cars are produced at plants in Japan, China, Thailand, Australia, USA.
7Honda CR-V
In seventh place is also a car, the work of the Japanese auto industry. The Honda CR-V SUV this year shows sales of 449,000 copies. This is 21.7% less than last year. The Japanese compact SUV has been produced since 1995. Its abbreviation means “compact recreational vehicle”.
8.Chevrolet Silverado
The eighth-ranked Chevrolet Silverado sold 433,000 units. The sales volume compared to 2021 decreased by 4.1%. General Motors has been making this full-size pickup since 1999.
9.Dodge RAMs
420,000 people bought RAM pickups in 2021. Sales of this model are down 14.3%. In terms of luxury, the RAM comes close to premium passenger cars. The center console of the 2021-2022 model is made in the Tesla style: between the two flaps there is a 12-inch touchscreen for multimedia and navigation.
10. Toyota Hilux
Hilux was chosen by 416,000 customers in 2022. This is 0.7% more than last year. Medium sized pickup: simple, functional and easy to maintain. This makes it popular all over the world. It was on the Hilux that the Top Gear presenters reached the Earth’s North Magnetic Pole.
11.Hyundai Tucson
This Korean car is recognized as the most bought in Russia. Globally, it was bought by 410,000 drivers in 2022. The compact SUV is named after the American city of Tucson (Arizona). The car easily adapts to any weather conditions due to the presence of three driving modes: “Mud”, “Sand” and “Snow”.
Good sales in 2022 also for the Japanese Nissan Sylphy (274,000 January-July), Toyota Yaris (254,000 January-July) and the Chinese Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (264,000 January-July). Chinese electric vehicles are showing good results and are experiencing strong growth. For example, the BYD model jumped from 100th to 19th place and the Qin Plus electric sedan jumped from 141st to 29th place.
