Not a dark horse, Indonesia is the favorite to win the 2022 AFF Cup

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Coach Indonesian National team Shin Tae Yong want to make sure that the Garuda team will be the favorite team to win in the 2022 AFF Cup, not a dark horse team like in the 2020 AFF Cup.

The success of the Indonesian national team as the runner-up of the 2020 AFF Cup surprised many parties. Coming to Singapore as a non-seeded team, Indonesia succeeded in becoming the group winner until they stepped into the final round.

Shin Tae Yong said that Indonesia’s defeat to Thailand 2-6 on aggregate in the 2020 AFF Cup final was more due to the lack of experience that Asnawi Mangkualam and his friends had in a major tournament final.

The South Korean coach wants to make sure the Indonesian national team learns from the experience in the 2020 AFF Cup. The Indonesian national team coach wants the Garuda team to attend the 2022 AFF Cup as a candidate for champion.

“We will be more prepared for the next edition of the AFF Cup. In the next edition we will not be the Dark Horse team, we will be champion candidates,” said Shin Tae Yong quoted from Bangkok Post.

Furthermore, Shin Tae Yong said the mental problems that were destroyed due to lack of experience were clearly seen when the Indonesian national team was defeated by Thailand 0-4 in the first leg of the 2020 AFF Cup final.

“The lack of experience from our easy players was clearly seen in the first leg of the final, but I think in the second leg we put up a good fight and we will make sure to learn from this mistake in the next tournament,” said Shin Tae Yong.

“If we are able to learn from this experience, then we will not be dark horses, but candidates for champions in the next tournament, and that’s why we want to ensure that approach,” said the 51-year-old coach.
