Norwegians spend billions on shopping during festive days

The big festive days in connection with Christmas, Easter and 17 May are traditionally the biggest shopping days. The previous peak day for trading was 5 April when we traded for NOK 2.35 billion.

– We spent more money on groceries than we usually do in everyday life. Almost 50 per cent of what we shopped before 17 May was from grocery stores. On weekdays, groceries only account for around 40 per cent, says Kjetil Bøe, Head of Payments at BankID BankAxept.

Full mill on the town

On the big day of celebration on 17 May, we traded for NOK 463 million, 5 percent less than last year. We still used over 50 per cent more than in 2021.

About half of the money was spent on food and drink at the bar and restaurant. The trend was similar for all the big cities, where we spent a little less in the city than last year, but shopped for a slightly larger amount per purchase.

– This May 17 celebration, spending was not as high as last year. It was as expected when the actual “liberation” from the corona epidemic was celebrated last year, says Kjetil Bøe.
